Chinowa Ring Purification Ritual at Sekitaitei Ishida
At Sekitaitei Ishida, from 6/5 to 6/30,
we will set up a Chinowa (sacred grass ring) ritual to cleanse misfortune from the past six months
and pray for safety and well-being in the six months ahead.
In Japan since ancient times, this season—just before summer—was often associated with outbreaks of illness,
so the Chinowa ritual came to be performed to ward off misfortune and pray for good health.
Each year, our inn also prepares a Chinowa on the grounds before summer
and holds Nagoshi no Harae, a purification rite to dispel calamity.
*This year’s Nagoshi Festival will be held on June 30 from 10:00 to 14:00.
