A relaxing accommodation with colorful Japanese Kaiseki cuisine, seven soothing hot springs, and the aroma of Shinshu wine.
"Oiwaraya Ryokan" is a tranquil Onsen accommodation nestled in Matsumoto's Utsukushigahara Onsen, which has been flowing for 1,300 years since the Nara period. We offer heartfelt hospitality in a harmonious blend of traditional and modern Japanese-style comfort. Our facility features seven unique bathing areas, including an indoor bath surrounded by the scent of cypress, an open-air bath with a sense of freedom, stone baths, and garden baths with seasonal views. Each bath offers a distinct charm, allowing you to enjoy Onsen hopping and immerse yourself in the changing ambiance from morning to night, providing deep relaxation to soothe your travel fatigue. Our cuisine showcases vibrant kaiseki dishes made with seasonal ingredients from the local Shinshu region. Each dish, beautifully presented on exquisite plates, reflects the flavors of the seasons and the skill of our chefs, offering a true "culinary art." Centered around Shinshu beef, river fish, and mountain delicacies, our meals allow you to savor both taste and the changing seasons. To complement your dining experience, we offer wines crafted at our own winery, "Domaine de Yunohara," using grapes nurtured in Shinshu's pure air and rich soil. These carefully produced wines pair perfectly with Japanese cuisine. With a variety of white, red, and sparkling options available, you can choose according to your preference. Each room is uniquely designed to provide a relaxing space that combines traditional Japanese tranquility with modern comfort. At Oiwaraya Ryokan, we strive to be a warm and welcoming accommodation that makes you want to return. Along with our dedication to fine cuisine and heartfelt hospitality, we aim to provide each guest with a serene and relaxing experience. Our staff looks forward to welcoming you with all our hearts.
We stayed over a three-day weekend and were very satisfied with both the Facility and the service. It turned into a last-minute trip and we made our Reservation on the day of our stay, but this Ryokan was more comfortable than the Accommodation Fee would suggest.Meals:Breakfast featured a wide variety of dishes made with local ingredients. Everything was delicious.Room:The Room was clean and spacious enough for two people. Being able to replace the hand towels was a small touch, but I really appreciated it.Baths:We bathed twice, morning and evening. We were grateful that we could Reserve a private bath by phone before check-in. Every bath was very clean; none were particularly large, but they felt calm and relaxing. Because the shower water was also Onsen water, the water pressure was weak, but it didn’t bother me much.Inside the Accommodation:Every staff member greeted us with a smile whenever we passed by. We also enjoyed how much there was to see—there’s a pond inside, as well as a beautifully maintained courtyard with an ashiyu (footbath). Since I don’t often buy souvenirs at a Ryokan, I’m glad I could purchase cider made at the on-site winery.

Introduction of the Accommodation

"Oiwekaya Ryokan," a historic Ryokan located in an Onsen town dating back to the Nara period.
The history of Utsukushigahara Onsen dates back to the early Nara period. According to the "Nihon Shoki," Emperor Tenmu ordered a map of Shinano Province to be presented for his visit to "Tsukuma no Yutou," which is believed to be the present-day Utsukushigahara Onsen. Utsukushigahara Onsen boasts a rich history since the Nara period, and its high-quality waters have been cherished by locals for centuries. Known for its excellent heat-retention properties, you can feel warmth radiating from deep within your body even after leaving the bath. At Oiwakeya Ryokan, we offer seven unique types of Onsen for you to enjoy. Experience a delightful tour of our baths and relax in an atmosphere where time flows gently.

A long-standing Ryokan has created a winery by relocating a Meiji-era storehouse within its premises, blending tradition with the spirit of a new era. Through glass windows, you can observe the brewing equipment and wine cellar, experiencing the atmosphere of the winemaking space up close. On the second floor, there is a galette specialty restaurant with an adjoining wine shop. During lunch, you can enjoy freshly baked galettes paired with wines and ciders from our own winery, Domaine de Yunohara. The setting is Matsumoto Satoyamabe Yunohara district, known as the birthplace of grape cultivation in Shinshu. This area once featured serene landscapes with vineyards spread across its four seasons. With a desire to "revive and preserve the scenery of vineyards for future generations," in spring 2023, the Ryokan planted grape seedlings and took its first step into winemaking. We cultivate 14 varieties of grapes, including Delaware, Chardonnay, and Pinot Noir, in our own vineyard and also produce cider using apples sourced from local farmers. Committed to working alongside the community, we focus on crafting beverages that highlight the flavors of this land. Our goal is to create wines and ciders that gently complement traditional Japanese cuisine and add color to everyday dining tables. While learning from time-honored winemaking traditions overseas, we aim to craft refined yet casual wines that reflect Japan's climate and the unique character of this region.

Located on the second floor of our winery, "Domaine de Yunohara," the wine shop and galette café "Cave à Vin de Yunohara" offers a delightful dining experience. This lunch and café spot is produced by the historic Onsen Ryokan "Oiwakeya Ryokan" in Utsukushigahara Onsen, where you can enjoy wine and local ingredients. We serve galettes made with buckwheat flour from Nagano Prefecture and eggs from Matsumoto, beautifully garnished with seasonal vegetables. Expert chefs from the Ryokan carefully prepare crispy and aromatic galettes that enhance the natural flavors of the ingredients. During lunch hours, enjoy a galette set with soup, while at café time, savor seasonal sweets like apple pie made with Matsumoto apples, along with coffee, cider, or wine at your leisure.

We pay meticulous attention to tableware and table settings, ensuring you can enjoy not only the flavors but also the visual presentation.

Each Room features a unique design, allowing you to enjoy its individual character.

We offer seven unique hot spring baths. Enjoy exploring the different atmospheres of each bath.

A special lounge for adults to indulge in Shinshu wine and tranquility.
