    Excessive politeness can sometimes be unnecessary.

    About 10 years ago, I stayed here and found the large public bath and open-air bath to be neither particularly good nor bad. This time, I chose a room with a private open-air bath. However, the garden view from the private bath was underwhelming, and seeing the neighboring building ruined the atmosphere. Since I checked in on a Monday, there were only 3-4 groups of guests, making it quiet inside the accommodation, which was nice. However, the staff member assigned to our room was overly polite during check-in explanations to an extent that felt awkward and unsettling. The same staff member served us during meals. While their service was polite, their lengthy explanations about each dish disrupted the flow of dining and created an awkward rhythm. The food itself was delicious but overly elaborate in presentation (including tableware), which detracted from fully enjoying it. This sense of "overdone presentation leading to diminished enjoyment" seemed to permeate throughout this Ryokan. In contrast, my favorite long-established Ryokan in Atami strikes a perfect balance between politeness and friendliness across all staff members—from attendants to those managing baths (whose presence is subtle yet undoubtedly there). Their understated service creates an exceptionally comfortable experience that reflects true professionalism. I apologize for my critical feedback but believe there is ample room for growth here. I hope you find these comments helpful for future improvements.

    Not bad, but...

    The quality of the hot water is remarkable. The Room, semi-open-air bath, and garden were satisfying. We also enjoyed the Noh stage performance. However, communication with the staff was challenging, leading us to give up on conversations midway (e.g., stereotypical explanations, lack of local knowledge, misidentifying Japanese sake as foreign alcohol due to its katakana name, inability to maintain a smooth conversation). The meals were plain without surprises or excitement. Skincare products were provided in shared bottles with low quality (similar to a Business Hotel), and the same applies to shampoo, conditioner, and body soap. While it wasn't entirely bad, I honestly cannot recommend it to family or friends.

    Highly Satisfying Accommodation

    This was my first stay at this accommodation. I was highly satisfied with the staff's hospitality, the warmth of the onsen, the exquisite preparation of the cuisine, the attention to detail in the room, and even the subtle fragrance of incense that I noticed. I was particularly impressed by how each dish in the kaiseki meal highlighted its ingredients without being overly assertive. Enjoying a soak in the large public bath and relaxing in lukewarm water in my private room bath was pure bliss. The solo drum performance on the Noh stage was also an exceptional experience. After a four-hour journey by land to Ishikotei Ishida, it turned out to be an incredibly satisfying accommodation. Apologies: I forgot to return my room key and had to send it back via mail. My apologies for any inconvenience caused.

    The meals were very disappointing.

    The accommodation was excellent in terms of service, rooms, cleanliness, and facilities. However, I was honestly shocked and deeply disappointed that none of the dishes were delicious. To be frank, the level of cuisine is far too low compared to the prestige of the ryokan. Even something as basic as making dashi seemed careless and unprofessional. Horse sashimi and fish sashimi were served, but only one soy sauce dish was provided. It is unacceptable even from a layperson's perspective to eat animal meat and fish sashimi using the same dish. I seriously question how such practices can be carried out by professional chefs without concern. As for the room, it was unfortunate that there wasn’t a single place to hang towels.

    Car

    It would have been nice to have a wider variety of drinks available at the post-bath area. The Room staff were excellent. When checking out, the car was prepared for us, but there was bird droppings in the middle of the windshield that wasn’t there yesterday; it would have been better if it had been cleaned. The explanation from the accounting staff was a bit unclear, which left me feeling slightly disappointed after getting into the car at the end.

    The coffee I had in the lobby after breakfast was delicious.

    The lobby features a Noh stage, and after dinner, you can enjoy a 30-minute performance by street performers. The facility is designed as a single-story building, making it easy to navigate for older guests. The guest rooms are built in a detached style, allowing for a quiet and peaceful stay. The private open-air bath in the guest room has sliding doors with shoji-style panels that help block out the cold air, ensuring comfort even on chilly days. Although there is an additional charge, the coffee served in the lobby after breakfast was delicious. I would love to visit again when I’m in the area—thank you!

    Would love to visit again!

    The Onsen water at Hirugami was silky smooth and very pleasant, and I enjoyed soaking in the Onsen four times during my one-night stay. Although the Facility is old, it has been restored and kept very clean. The garden was also lovely. The meals were flavorful, visually appealing, and satisfying. With jazz music playing in a dimly lit, quiet atmosphere, I could enjoy my meal at a relaxed pace. As a tea lover, I wished for better quality tea leaves in the Room and higher-quality roasted green tea served with meals. The teacups in the Room were too tall and narrow to use comfortably. I would love to visit again!

    We stayed in Room 10...

    We stayed in Room 107 from March 16 to March 17. All the staff were thoughtful and attentive. We had an 8-month-old baby with us, and their consideration for our needs was exceptional. The person in charge of Room 107 was a trainee from overseas, but their dedication and enthusiasm to make guests happy were truly inspiring, making us want to cheer them on. Moreover, at checkout, we received a handwritten letter from Ann through her senior staff member. It was touching to see how hard she worked to write it correctly in Japanese using kanji. Through Ann, we could feel the care and dedication of the Ryokan and its staff. Thank you for such a pleasant stay. We look forward to visiting again!

    The hospitality, meals, and onsen are all excellent. I’m happy to have found another accommodation I want to revisit. I look forward to visiting again during the change of seasons.

    We stayed as a famil...

    We stayed as a family of four, including a toddler. The Vietnamese staff member who assisted us provided very attentive and polite service, and their excellent Japanese was impressive. We were touched to receive a letter upon departure. Thank you for the heartfelt hospitality. The Onsen is rated 4 because the outdoor bath was too hot to enter, which was unfortunate. However, we were very satisfied with both the Room and the meals during our trip.

    Thank you for the wonderful memories.

    I made a Reservation, thinking it might be beyond my means, as a gesture of appreciation for my wife who has been by my side for so many years. On the day of our stay, we checked in at 3 PM and were able to relax thanks to the heartfelt and courteous service. For dinner, we had ordered the standard kaiseki meal, but we were treated to the chef's meticulously prepared, exquisite dishes in a lovely private room with a view of the Noh theater where Yakko-sama was seated. The approximately two-hour dining experience passed by like magic. The Setsubun-themed presentation was also exceptional. Of course, the Onsen bath was wonderful as well. Thank you for giving us such a wonderful memory.

    I went there on the recommendation of an acquaintance.

    I travel to Onsen Ryokan every month. This was my first time using this one, and compared to other Ryokan, I felt the cleaning (especially the bathroom) was perfect. There are many luxury Ryokan, but few pay attention to details such as cleaning and flower arrangements. This Ryokan was also excellent in other aspects, such as the cuisine. I was particularly moved by the letter from the staff member I received at checkout. I would love to visit again.

    Thank you for taking care of us the other day. We stayed for one night last year as well, making this our second visit, and we were completely satisfied with the room, onsen, meals, and facility. The customer service was so courteous and attentive that we felt humbled. We were deeply moved by the farewell, as you waved until our car was out of sight. If there is an opportunity, we would love to visit for a third time.

    Satisfied with the hospitality

    The customer service provided by the staff, which truly embodies the hospitality of a Ryokan, was pleasant from check-in to check-out. Although there were no complimentary drinks in the room, they were promptly brought upon request, which made us feel the spirit of service rather than any inconvenience. Both the semi-open-air bath and the washroom in the room were spacious, and the quality of the spring water was smooth and pleasant. The evening Kyogen performance was an unusual and enjoyable experience. Both my spouse and I received spa treatments, and the service was excellent. There were minor issues that can be found at any property, but even considering those, it was a very satisfying stay. We would like to visit again to watch Noh next time.

    The Stays was very spacious and nice, but the shower was extremely weak, which was inconvenient. It was also difficult to adjust the heating. It felt hot when turned on and cold when turned off. It was disappointing that there was no complimentary coffee in the Room, which is usually available everywhere.

    Heartwarming hospitality

    We used this facility for a long-awaited trip as a couple. From the confirmation call at the time of reservation, we already felt the spirit of hospitality and were able to approach the day with peace of mind. In fact, the staff's response was very polite and pleasant. The facility's amenities and services were excellent! However, it was a bit disappointing that the aging of the guest rooms was noticeable. Perhaps there are some renovated guest rooms. The other guests using the facility were also quiet, allowing us to enjoy a serene "adult trip." Thank you very much.

    Stays at Hirugami Onsen

    Second stay. In the renewed room, you can enjoy the beautiful glasswork of the "Bohemian Crystal" washbasin. The semi-open-air bath becomes a private room when you close the sliding door. However, it gets chilly in the morning and evening, so we recommend the large bath for washing your hair. Both the family bath and the large bath offer the smooth texture of Hirugami Onsen, which feels truly pleasant. From the open-air bath of the large bath, you can see a bit of the yellow leaves of the nearby mountains, and it will surely be even more beautiful during the autumn foliage season. The staff are all very kind and polite. All amenities are provided. The meals are not overwhelmingly impressive, but they make good use of seasonal ingredients, and we enjoyed dishes like matsutake rice and dobin mushi. The portions are not large, but they were just right for us in our 50s. For breakfast, we chose regular Japanese cuisine instead of the tanka meal, and the "porridge with goji berries" served first was very delicious, with a warmth and taste that delighted the body. The refrigerator only contains free water. We would like to have at least a coffee machine like Nespresso. There is no coffee service after breakfast, and we were recommended to go to the lounge in front of the entrance for paid coffee, which was a bit disappointing. At 8:30 PM, we watched a drum performance on the Noh stage in front of the entrance, which was interesting as we rarely have the opportunity to see such performances. The morning market nearby is bustling, with many local vegetables and foods for sale. It is held for a short time from 6 to 8 AM, so we recommend getting up early to visit.

    I stayed on September 6th.

    I visited for our wedding anniversary, and I'm glad we stayed at Sekitaitei Ishida. The Noh stage, which you can't see elsewhere, was impressive. We went out and participated in the informal gathering, but we also got to see a bit of the Kyogen performance held inside the inn, which was nice. I hope Sekitaitei Ishida's efforts to preserve historical culture and provide opportunities like this will continue. The Shine Muscat grapes and apples we bought at the Hirugami Onsen morning market were truly delicious. It's an inn I would like to visit again.

    Exquisite, Japanese Auberge

    The room was great, the hot spring was great, the food was great, and the staff was great, allowing us to enjoy an extraordinary stay. Everything exceeded our expectations, and we were extremely satisfied. We were able to relax slowly. The private open-air bath in the room was wonderful in both quality and facilities. The cuisine was delicate and beautiful, and we enjoyed it very much. The bathroom facilities were dazzling and luxurious. If I may be greedy, I wish there were drinks other than mineral water in the refrigerator. It is an exquisite hot spring inn that I would like to visit again.

    The bathroom in the room is a small unit bath. It doesn't really make me want to use it. The rooms in the building are hard to find. I wish they would at least provide coffee in the room. In a good ryokan, if you give a tip, the landlady usually expresses her gratitude.

    I was able to relax in every aspect.

    The path of Typhoon No. 10 was uncertain, so we canceled our planned trip to the highlands and visited Hirugami Onsen nearby. I wanted to go at the end of the year, but I was disappointed that I couldn't make a reservation. Fortunately, there was one room available that day. The inn, with its spacious single-story design, provided a calming atmosphere, making me feel like I was in a different world, away from my usually hectic life. The woman in charge of our room explained everything gently and quietly, and I felt her thoughtful care everywhere. I thought I would definitely like to visit next time with my female friends. The only disappointing point was the lack of coffee service after meals. When I travel, I usually bring my own drip coffee, but I thought this inn would surely have it. I hope they will consider this in the future.

    A difficult-to-evaluate inn

    In this price range, having only yukata provided, only water in the room's refrigerator, and all coffee being charged doesn't seem like a service that matches the price compared to inns in other regions with the same price range. I saw reviews saying the meals were small, so I ordered extra meat sushi in advance, but the portions were large (especially the sashimi) and it wasn't necessary. The taste of every dish was very delicious, and I am grateful for the consideration given to allergies and disliked ingredients.

    A luxury inn with delicious cuisine.

    I wanted to go to a cool place, so I planned a trip to Shinshu. We were welcomed by the staff at the gate and entered inside. The chewy Japanese sweets and matcha tea relieved the fatigue of the journey. The room we wanted was not available, so we stayed in a room with two beds. The large public bath had a nice slippery feel to the water, but it started raining at night, so we couldn't use the open-air bath without a roof. It was also disappointing that we couldn't use the café in the evening. The detox water after the bath was very nice. Dinner and breakfast were in a dining room with a nice atmosphere. Dinner was creative and very delicious, and the dishes were lovely. We were very full. I chose Japanese food for breakfast. There was warm rice, but cold porridge was served, so I thought it would be nice if it could be replaced with soy milk or tomato juice. I also thought it would have been better if the squid somen was a salad. My daughter chose Western food and was satisfied with the omelet, sausage, sautéed spinach, salad, and yogurt. The hospitality and thoughtfulness of the proprietress and staff were wonderful, and the food was delicious and the bath was nice, so I would like to visit again in autumn or spring. The morning market near the inn was also fun. This time, we hurriedly departed as a typhoon was approaching, but I hope we can take it a bit slower next time.

    I was able to spend a relaxing time.

    I chose a room with both Western and Japanese styles, so I was able to relax in the Japanese-style room. However, due to the room's structure, the neighboring room might have also been a bedroom, and I was slightly bothered by the snoring from next door. But this is a matter of luck, so it can't be helped. After dinner, I was able to listen to koto and shamisen performances at the Noh stage. For breakfast, I chose the Tanka meal, and the 31 different side dishes were impressive. I think anyone visiting here should try it at least once. Quite a few people come to Hirugami Onsen, and even though it was a weekday, many people attended the morning market. There were more Japanese people than foreigners, which made me think it's truly a hot spring worth visiting repeatedly. The alkaline hot spring makes your skin smooth. However, as someone who prefers lukewarm baths, I found it a bit hot, so it was a bit disappointing that the outdoor bath wasn't slightly cooler for longer soaking. Nevertheless, it was a very relaxing and good inn. I've added another place to revisit in my retirement.
