Established in 1888. Experience the charm of history at this accommodation loved by many literary and artistic figures.

"Shimazaki Toson Yukari no Yado Itoya" is a Ryokan established in 1888, located at the entrance of Manyo Park in the center of Yugawara Onsen. It was at this Property where Shimazaki Toson developed the concept for his masterpiece "Before the Dawn," and even today, his manuscripts and personal belongings remain preserved. Since ancient times, the Ryokan has been beloved as a regular stay for literary and artistic figures such as Duke Tokudaiji, Seiki Kuroda, Encho, and Takeo Arishima. Additionally, the February 26 Incident of 1936, where soldiers of the Azabu First Regiment under Captain Kono attacked Baron Nobuaki Makino, who was staying at the Property, remains a significant historical event.

  • This was my first stay here. All of the staff were consistently friendly and welcoming with warm smiles, making my stay truly pleasant. The meals were also excellent, featuring fresh and luxurious sashimi boat platters that I thoroughly enjoyed.Personally, I also appreciated the calm atmosphere, as there were no overseas guests during my stay.It felt like a classic, traditional Japanese Ryokan, and I hope it will continue to build on its history for many years to come.I would love to visit again.

  • Stayed in Room 52, a designated Important Cultural Property. The pillars, the wavy glass, the transoms, and the alcove were all wonderful. The fresh flowers were beautiful too. I’m not an expert, but it just felt so nice and calming. I’m grateful that it has been so carefully maintained and that we were able to stay here. All of the staff were kind, and their warm atmosphere really came through. However, it seemed very busy over the holiday weekend. I would have loved to hear a little more about the Room.We thoroughly enjoyed both the Onsen and the meals.Thank you very much.

  • 【Yukake Festival】A festival where Onsen is poured onto a mikoshi

Saturday, May 23: The Yukake Festival parade will pass by.

The hot-spring town’s signature festival, the “Yukake Festival,” will be held again this year on Saturday, May 23.
At the Yukake Festival, spectators splash Onsen water with a big “splash!” from the roadside onto the passing mikoshi (portable shrine)—a rare and unique tradition.
Its distinctive excitement and the strong sense of unity between the mikoshi bearers and the crowd are major highlights.

On the day, the Yukake Mikoshi will pass right in front of our Accommodation.
One of the main venues, “Manyo Park Entrance Plaza,” is also just steps away.
We recommend splashing Onsen water on the mikoshi in front of our Accommodation, then heading straight to Manyo Park Entrance Plaza after the parade passes to enjoy more of the festivities.

Please stay in Yugawara Onsen and come experience this one-of-a-kind festival.

    -------------------------------------------------------
For details about the “Yukake Festival,” please visit the Tourism Association website.

(If you watch close to the parade route, Onsen water may splash onto you.
Please take care to protect your clothing and especially mobile devices from getting wet.
If you are unsure on your feet or prefer to watch without getting wet,
we recommend viewing from a slightly set-back spot in our garden.)
