Detached Inn Nonbiri Papa

I stayed here on a weekday in mid-May 2026 during an Aso touring trip.I chose this place because I wanted to stay in Minami-Aso, and it offered a light dinner set with good value for a one-night, two-meal plan. (Under JPY 20,000 for two people.)We chose a detached Japanese-Western style Room. It had air conditioning, a large TV, and a refrigerator, and since it has been renovated I had no complaints about the Room. Amenities such as yukata robes and toothbrushes were properly provided, which is very helpful for bikers who don’t want extra luggage.For bathing, there is a separate building with a private rock bath that you can reserve for exclusive use. They seem to use Onsen water from the Onsen Facility “Ruri,” but for someone like me who believes “freshness matters” with hot springs, it was just okay. (Still better than nothing.)The light dinner was enough for me as I don’t eat much. Big eaters may want to stop by “Direx,” about 5 km away, to pick up late-night snacks before check-in.Breakfast is Western-style centered on bread; it was more than enough for me and I had no issues with the taste.My main complaint was that with Docomo service the signal was weak and internet access was difficult at times. There is free Wi‑Fi, but I prefer not to use it due to security concerns.There is no dedicated motorcycle parking area, so parking is outdoors and your bike may be exposed to night dew depending on the season. If you stay in one of the detached Rooms, parking under the trees helps reduce dew somewhat.Access can be tricky depending on your navigation system. Navigation units using Zenrin map data handle small roads well; others may give odd directions. Google Maps on smartphones can also be inaccurate here and may lead you to the wrong entrance.If you are coming via National Route 325 from the Kumamoto side: after passing the entrance of “Shiramisui DHC No. 2 Factory,” you will soon see a “Nonbiri Papa” sign—confirm it and turn left. Then keep climbing up the narrow road.If you are coming from Takamori: after passing “Higo Sushi,” you will quickly see the “Nonbiri Papa” sign—don’t miss it; turning right at that sign is key.

I stayed solo for two nights this time. There aren’t many Accommodations with an Onsen that welcome solo guests, but this one was a real find. The second-generation owner (the son) runs the place, and the egg dish at breakfast was incredibly delicious on both days. Breakfast is served in the dining room while looking out at a beautiful garden; the coffee was great too, and it felt as elegant as a Hotel breakfast. The Facility isn’t brand-new, but everything is very well maintained and spotless! The Room heating included a warm carpet, air conditioning, and an additional fan heater, so even I—someone who gets cold easily—was comfortable. The detached Onsen also had air conditioning in both the changing area and bathing area, making it comfortable even in colder seasons. The rock bath Onsen was wonderful. The owner’s mother is also very refined, which made perfect sense given the tasteful main building and garden. They mentioned that guest numbers still haven’t returned to pre-COVID levels yet. This is a lovely Accommodation with sincere hospitality and thoughtful care from the owner. The garden is spacious and beautiful—so as someone who loves camping, I’d love to see you open a campsite!
