Hitoyoshi Ryokan

From the Ryokan’s exterior, you can sense its history, and once inside, its wonderfully quiet atmosphere makes you glad you came. The Onsen was also mildly alkaline and had a smooth, silky feel on the skin. The meals were excellent as well, and we thoroughly enjoyed Yamame trout and Ayu from the Kuma River.

I stayed for one night during my trip from Kumamoto to Kagoshima. I chose this accommodation because it is a nationally registered tangible cultural property. The accommodation has a historical charm, with simplicity and warmth. On the other hand, it may not be suitable for those seeking the latest facilities. Many of the staff are from Asia, but they make an effort to communicate warmly, and the Japanese staff are also friendly and approachable, making the stay feel welcoming and comfortable. The onsen leaves your skin smooth after bathing with its moisturizing effect. There are both indoor and outdoor baths; however, you need to walk through a corridor and change clothes temporarily, which can be slightly inconvenient but not bothersome overall. Additionally, there are two private family baths available without reservation so couples or families can enjoy them together.Meals were creative—dinner included dishes like tagine pots while breakfast had some buffet-style options to choose from. The food was luxurious and delicious with generous portions that left me overeating (laughs). It seems this area suffered damage from flooding a few years ago, and I could sense their efforts toward recovery. Although it was Saturday, there weren’t many guests so I could enjoy the bath almost privately; however, I couldn’t help but wonder if more visitors would ease their business challenges.Hitoyoshi itself is historically fascinating when explored thoroughly with excellent onsen quality as well—if given another chance in the future—I’d love to visit again!
