Echigo Tanaka Onsen Shinano-so

A quaint and traditional Japanese Ryokan with a cozy atmosphere. The service is not overbearing, but they attentively cater to necessary requests, creating a "just right" balance that allowed for a relaxing stay. The highlight was undoubtedly the snow-view Onsen, which was truly exceptional. Meals were carefully prepared and paired wonderfully with local sake. However, indoor entertainment options are limited, so it may not be suitable for those seeking such amenities.For those using JR Iiyama Line's Echigo-Tanaka Station, one point to note is the train schedule—departures are only available around 7 AM or noon. If you plan to have breakfast before leaving, there might be about a two-hour wait after the 10 AM checkout time. This accommodation offers a paid option to extend checkout in line with public transportation schedules (as mentioned in the room guide). It would have been helpful if this information was listed on the reservation site for better planning beforehand (though I might have simply overlooked it). Since I planned to leave on the 7 AM train, I opted for a no-breakfast plan and requested an onigiri bento box prepared the night before. The cold Koshihikari rice balls were still delicious—a delightful treat in their own way.This charming Ryokan exudes rustic charm and evokes nostalgic feelings despite being my first visit. It left me with an inexplicable sense of comfort and warmth—I would love to return again someday!

The room had three glass windows, including the front room. For heating, there were several options such as a kerosene heater and air conditioning, so it was never cold. While many accommodations cut costs these days, the hallway was equipped with both heating and speakers playing bird sounds, which created a soothing atmosphere. Throughout our trip, we kept saying how thoughtful "Shinano-so" was. During dinner, they prepared the futon in our room so that when we returned to rest, we could enjoy the view of the sky, trees, and snow through the large window—absolutely perfect. The glass wall area also allowed us to sit on chairs and relax while sipping drinks—it was very enjoyable. After breakfast, they kindly left the futon as it was so that we could continue enjoying the window view by sitting or lying down until check-out time. We also appreciated both the taste of meals and their beautiful presentation on dishes. For dinner, we tried additional orders of game sausage and pork sausage for comparison—the bear meat had a strong wild flavor which made it interesting; boar tasted like its relative pig—also fascinating! Even though I booked through IKYU.com, I could choose between coffee or milk for breakfast and pay by credit card—a great convenience since there aren’t many shops nearby.Unfortunately though—and this is my only regret—I didn’t use their bath much because I noticed some dirt in the women’s bath (which seemed like an exception). Next time I’d love to try again; my companion mentioned seeing koi fish there! From having water ready in our room to offering help with clearing snow off our car at check-out or keeping hallways warm—they provided attentive service that has become rare these days.When we arrived with heavy luggage (apologies for that!), a male staff member kindly carried them up to our room—thank you very much for your thoughtfulness!Everything about this accommodation exceeded expectations.Thank you for taking care of us!
