The creative, thoughtfully prepared meals were outstanding, and the sulfur Onsen—though known as one of Japan’s strongest acidic springs—was surprisingly comfortable, gently soothing as you soak. The natural atmosphere throughout the Onsen, along with the surrounding nature and starry sky seen through the windows, made it truly special. I believe this is one of Japan’s finest hot springs. The water was slightly on the hotter side, and I was able to enjoy the open-air bath for a long time. Above all, what I came to Yamagata seeking was the warmth and kindness of its people that I had experienced before—and this time it exceeded my expectations. The hospitality felt completely natural, never like a routine service task, and their genuine care was truly comforting. It was the most relaxed I have ever felt at an Onsen Accommodation. There may be many other Accommodations that feel luxurious simply because money has been spent on buildings or meals, but I felt Zao Kokusai Hotel is a rare and wonderful place where you can still sense what matters most in Japanese hospitality: the sincere kindness and warmth of the people who work there. Despite being a large and spacious Accommodation, their attentiveness in every detail throughout the Facility was exceptional in so many ways.

The Room size, facilities and amenities, cleanliness, and the breathtaking ocean view are all flawless. I think it offers far better value for money than staying at a nearby Resort Hotel. However, you may be a bit confused if you arrive expecting a typical Hotel. There is no front desk or management office; instead, it’s an Airbnb-style setup where you enter the PIN sent to you after completing pre-registration. In my case, the registration email ended up in my spam folder, so I didn’t know what to do on site and only figured it out after calling the emergency contact number. I tried to upload the required ID documents for verification, but the connection was poor and it was difficult; in the end, I had to get the PIN by phone in quite a rush. If you complete pre-registration in advance, check-in should be smooth, and from the second stay onward there likely won’t be any issues—but it would be helpful if IKYU clearly noted these differences from a standard Hotel in the Facility description as well. Please also note that there is no elevator. In addition, the entrance floor is made of stepping stones with water around them. It may look stylish, but if you drop your phone or anything similar it’s game over, and it’s inconvenient when carrying heavy luggage—so there seems to be room for improvement.

Throughout our stay, we could feel the Accommodation’s pride and dignity in every detail, and it was a truly fulfilling experience. First, what deserves special mention is the thoroughness of the Room cleaning. Everything was carefully arranged down to the smallest detail, and the spotless space—without a speck of dust—made us feel that the fundamentals of an Accommodation were being upheld at an exceptionally high standard. We were also deeply impressed by the grace of the attendant’s service. Though she was young, she wore traditional attire, moved quietly with no wasted motion, and spoke with gentle refinement. In each gesture we sensed a polished spirit of hospitality; imagining how much effort she must have put in even brought tears to my eyes. (This old man is easily moved.) And above all, what was most outstanding was the exceptional quality of the cuisine. With generous use of premium ingredients, every aspect—the presentation, depth of flavor, and expression of seasonality—was superb. More than anything, I felt that what sustains this high level of service—and its true cornerstone—is the proprietress’s attitude. She consistently leads from the front, encouraging and guiding her staff. I was profoundly moved. These days, Accommodations like this are becoming rare. My wife and I are already talking about returning again in autumn. This is a genuinely outstanding Accommodation where you can experience Japan’s traditional beauty and refined elegance without exaggeration.

Once again, the property is filled with thoughtfully crafted touches throughout, and it’s fun to look for them. The Onsen shrine and the skin checker were especially memorable. I was just about to buy a skin checker myself, so that really hit home. All of the staff are hardworking, and it’s a pleasure to watch them at work. Best of all is the quality of the Onsen—small cuts heal quickly. I stayed 2 nights and bathed 10 times. I’d love to stay longer; it never gets boring. I even got better at darts. For a Multiple Night Stay, having lunch included was great—this time it was a buffet where you can eat as much as you like, which was wonderful. I’m looking forward to my next visit as well.

Starting with the most important thing—hospitality—I was extremely satisfied in almost every way. When I made the Reservation, you called me a week in advance to let me know about my mistake, which helped avoid any issues. Also, at many Ryokan there’s often nowhere to go or anything to do after dinner, so you end up spending the evening in your Room. Here, however, there were small events and a wonderful bar (thank you to both bartenders for staying late), and I had a great time (I ended up short on sleep, but that was part of the fun). The only thing I felt was that while every dinner dish was delicious, it lacked a bit of impact. For example, it would be even better if at least the main course felt more extraordinary (in presentation or staging). Also, since this is a mountainous area, standard sashimi isn’t necessary; seafood prepared with some extra care was served beforehand, and I felt that was more than enough. It’s not easy for me to visit again because it’s far away, but I would definitely love to come back.

The onsen was very relaxing. They also prepared a meal for our dog on the day, and seeing our dog eat it so enthusiastically made us feel happy too. We were able to spend a leisurely time surrounded by nature with no buildings around. We will definitely visit again. Thank y

This was my first time staying here. With only a few rooms, it was very quiet. The room was clean, and the view of Lake Shikotsu right in front of us was stunning. The Onsen in the room became even more open and relaxing when we opened the window, making it hard to leave. The private open-air bath also allowed for a peaceful and leisurely soak in a serene environment. The Onsen water was silky smooth, with just the right temperature. The Italian dinner was absolutely delicious as well. I have visited Lake Shikotsu many times, but this place feels like a hidden gem where I could truly enjoy a slow-paced time.
