Located in the heart of Mount Hakkoda in Aomori Prefecture, "Sukayu Onsen Ryokan" is a one-of-a-kind Onsen Ryokan where tradition and natural beauty come together. Its famous "Sen-nin Buro" (Thousand-Person Bath) is one of Japan's largest mixed-gender communal baths, offering an unforgettable experience for all visitors. From the fresh green and vibrant autumn foliage of the beech forests in spring and fall to the breathtaking snow-covered landscapes in winter, you can enjoy the beauty of each season. The Onsen, known for its highly acidic sulfuric waters, is renowned for its skin-beautifying and refreshing effects, providing a rejuvenating experience for both body and mind. Indulge in a luxurious escape from everyday life at Sukayu Onsen, a place steeped in history and tradition.

  • The Onsen was flawless. From the atmosphere to the water itself, it was exactly what you’d hope for in a true Onsen experience. The meals were more luxurious than expected, and the seasoning was excellent. The horse sashimi is especially recommended. Some guests may be dissatisfied because the Facility is old, but everything was well cleaned and well maintained, so we had no complaints this time. This is an Accommodation I hope will continue as a therapeutic hot-spring retreat.

  • I had visited the Sukayu Onsen several times before, but this was my first time staying overnight. I had reserved a room in the Touji Wing, so I was a bit nervous, but the accommodation was renovated and very clean. The room even had a toilet and sink, so there were no issues at all. Since it’s the Touji Wing, it came with a refrigerator and an electric kettle, which made me think it might even be better than the Ryokan Wing. While there is some cigarette smell from other Touji Wings, Building No. 3 is non-smoking, so there was no odor. It was also quiet without any noise from neighboring rooms, allowing for a comfortable stay. The free shuttle service was incredibly helpful.Even after checking out, we were allowed to use the onsen until our return bus departure time. This allowed us to enjoy soaking in the hot spring until the last moment.I appreciated how they preserved traditional elements like hallways and stair railings while incorporating modern updates here and there—it offers great options for guests. I’d love to try staying in either the Ryokan Wing or one of their traditional Touji Wings next time!

The iconic "Hiba Sen'nin Buro" of Sukayu Onsen spans approximately 160 tatami mats and utilizes four distinct hot spring sources. There are two baths: "Netsu no Yu" and "Shibun Rokubun no Yu." "Netsu no Yu" is a hot spring where water wells up from beneath the bath, designed to maintain around 41°C through its depth and size. The warmth persists even after bathing, hence the name "Netsu no Yu." Inside the bathhouse, there is a Shinto altar, indicating that this onsen has been cherished for a long time.

Seasonal natural scenery and activities

The area surrounding the Sukayu Onsen is enveloped by beech trees, offering vibrant fresh greenery in spring, deep green hues in summer, and stunning autumn foliage in fall, providing a variety of scenic views. During winter, the breathtaking sight of frost-covered trees emerges. Uniquely for a Property with an Onsen, Sukayu Onsen employs nature guides as specialized staff. From summer to autumn, activities such as mountain climbing tours and historical and natural tours around the Hakkoda area are available, while in winter, guided backcountry skiing tours are offered, tailored to the season. Additionally, limited-time activities like autumn foliage viewing and apple picking are also held.

The Onsen Property with the most snowfall in Japan

Located in Towada-Hachimantai National Park, Hakkoda-Sukayu Onsen is also known as a heavy snowfall area. Snow begins to fall annually from late October, and in January and February, snow accumulation reaches about 3-4 meters, with fluffy powder snow attracting skiers from around the world. Spring skiing can be enjoyed until early May. The "Snow Corridor" between Sukayu and Yachi Onsen, which opens from April 1, is also a symbol of spring.

History and Tradition - The Inheritance of Hot Spring Culture -

About 300 years ago, an Onsen was discovered, and since then, many people have traveled from afar to visit for therapeutic bathing. Even as the culture of therapeutic bathing fades with the passage of time, this Property still accommodates long-term stays for such purposes and retains Facilities like communal kitchens for therapeutic bathing. Additionally, Sukayu Onsen is a place where Tatsugoro Shikanai, affectionately known as the "Hermit," worked for 60 years, contributing to mountain rescue operations and serving as a mountain guide. The world-renowned woodblock print artist Shiko Munakata also visited and his works are displayed within the Property. Furthermore, Keizo Miura, the honorary lifetime advisor of the "Association to Preserve Mixed Bathing Culture," and his son, Yuichiro Miura, both cherished and frequently visited Sukayu.
