Gallery: Tracing the history of Goto Shojiro and the legacy he left in Kyoto.

Conveying the legacy of a devoted patriot into the present day. The Hotel grounds stand on the former site of “Tsuboya,” a soy sauce merchant that served as the regular lodging in Kyoto of Shojiro Goto (1838–1897), a samurai of the Tosa Domain who later played an active role in Japan’s new Meiji government. Deeply inspired by Ryoma Sakamoto’s vision for a new nation, Goto urged Shogun Yoshinobu Tokugawa—through Yodo Yamauchi—on the need to return governing authority to the Emperor.

Gallery

A gallery filled with exhibits recreating Kyoto at the end of the Edo period.

The gallery dedicated to Zojiro features a diorama recreating the townscape of the late Edo period, a replica of the ceremonial sword presented by the British Queen in gratitude after Zojiro drove off assailants in the Parkes Attack Incident, as well as letters and Chinese poems written in Zojiro’s own hand. Through these poetic exhibits, you can experience a new place that carries history forward and passes it on to the next era. Also, “Tsuboya,” shown in the photo above, was a wholesaler established in Kyoto by a long-established soy sauce brewer that had been producing soy sauce since the early Edo period in Tatsuno, Harima (Hyogo Prefecture)—a town known as “Little Kyoto” and still famous today as a renowned production area for light soy sauce essential to Kyoto cuisine.
