NIPPONIA Sasayama Castle Town Hotel
Hyogo Prefecture/Tamba-SasayamaSavor locally sourced gourmet cuisine and an extraordinary getaway at our Hotel nestled among the ruins of Sasayama Castle.
A different world just an hour's drive from Keihanshin, Tamba Sasayama is a castle town centered around the nationally designated historic site of Sasayama Castle Ruins. The rural landscapes with traditional farming villages, rice fields, and mountain ranges, along with local agricultural products like Tamba Sasayama black adzuki beans and Tamba chestnuts, offer visitors a sense of peace and comfort. In 2017, the Dekansho Festival of Tamba Sasayama was selected as Japan's first "Japan Heritage" by the Agency for Cultural Affairs. Tamba Sasayama is blessed with abundant nature that nurtures renowned specialties known throughout the whole country. From rice praised for its stickiness and sweetness to black soybeans, matsutake mushrooms, chestnuts, premium Sanda beef, and wild game such as boar and deer raised in the surrounding mountains—this area truly is a treasure trove of branded ingredients. Sasayama Castle Town Hotel NIPPONIA reimagines the entire historic castle town as a hotel by restoring scattered historical buildings into accommodations. The guest rooms retain their original design while offering modern comfort in an elegant setting. For dinner, guests can enjoy authentic French cuisine featuring seasonal ingredients from Tamba Sasayama. From guest houses scattered across the castle town within walking distance to attractions like the grand hall of Sasayama Castle Ruins or samurai residences to long-established shops and trendy new spots—the harmony between old and new defines this unique destination. Experience "staying as if blending into" this charming town while enjoying a journey filled with relaxation and gourmet delights.
This was my first time staying at NIPPONIA. The Accommodation’s website mentioned that, as it is a historic building, insulation might be insufficient, but that turned out to be completely unfounded. It was warm and comfortable throughout my stay. The next morning, I needed to leave early and thought I wouldn’t be able to have breakfast, but the staff spoke with the chef and arranged for it to be prepared an hour earlier than the usual serving time. Even though both the chef and staff may have had to start earlier than planned, they served us without a hint of displeasure, which I truly appreciated. It seemed like there were many young staff members, but I felt that everyone was attentive and genuinely cared about ensuring guests could spend their time comfortably.I would love to stay again.
こうださん 2/1/2026I visited after the holidays to avoid the crowds. I stayed in Room 902 of the longhouse accommodation, and with no other guests in the neighboring rooms, it felt like having an entire building to myself, allowing for a peaceful stay! Initially, I was assigned Room 901, but they kindly accommodated my sudden request to change rooms. I was thrilled to stay in the room I wanted—truly exceptional service from Nipponia! The food and paired drinks were absolutely delicious without any complaints. Although my room was separate from the main accommodation building, shuttle service made transportation smooth and convenient. Above all, the attentiveness and excellent service of the staff are why I visit Nipponia every year—it’s simply outstanding!

Introduction of the Accommodation

Tamba Sasayama is a charming town that, despite its proximity to the Keihanshin metropolitan area, preserves its rich natural environment, traditions, and historical landscapes. The nostalgic streets of the castle town centered around the nationally designated historic site of Sasayama Castle Ruins evoke a sense of familiarity, while the rural villages with their idyllic countryside and mountain views offer visitors a soothing retreat. Sasayama Castle Town Hotel NIPPONIA is a unique decentralized hotel concept that transforms the entire historic castle town into an accommodation experience. It features seven restored historical buildings scattered throughout the town, including structures such as an early Meiji-era former bank owner's residence over 100 years old and an Edo-period townhouse. The hotel offers 19 rooms in total.

The seven guesthouse buildings, named after chrysanthemums associated with Tamba Sasayama, are scattered throughout the castle town. Each building is unique and full of character. With options for exclusive use of an entire building or accommodations suitable for multi-generational families, each guesthouse has fewer than five rooms per building, allowing for a spacious and private stay. These historical buildings embody Japan's unique way of life, culture developed over time, the strength of historical spaces, and regional characteristics. Rather than discarding them due to age, they are preserved as treasures through sustainable efforts that make use of their original form as much as possible. By staying here, you also contribute to revitalizing the local community. After checking in at the ONAE building where the front desk and restaurant are located, enjoy strolling through the historic streets on your way to your room. (The farthest guesthouse is approximately 2 kilometers from ONAE; shuttle service by car is available for distant locations.) Exploring the town may lead to serendipitous encounters or interactions with local residents that enrich your journey even further. Immerse yourself in daily life here and experience Sasayama Castle Town's unique culture in a way that cannot be replicated elsewhere.

From rooms featuring a total cypress bath with the gentle scent and warmth of wood to rooms offering views of the beautiful greenery in private gardens, all accommodations have been transformed into refined spaces of relaxation, preserving their original design while incorporating modern comfort. For dining, we offer authentic French cuisine that highlights seasonal ingredients from Tamba Sasayama, including renowned black soybeans, matsutake mushrooms, chestnuts, Sasayama beef, and game meats such as wild boar and deer raised in the surrounding mountains. Hotel NIPPONIA in Sasayama Castle Town promises moments to soothe your body and mind while providing encounters with the history, culture, and gastronomy that Tamba Sasayama proudly offers.

In the Sasayama castle town, you'll find a variety of unique shops, including stylish restaurants and souvenir stores housed in renovated traditional homes and vacant buildings, offering unexpected encounters and surprises. Additionally, historical landmarks, long-established renowned stores, and trendy new spots are all within walking distance from each guestroom building of the Hotel. Stroll through the harmonious blend of old and new in this charming castle town while staying here to feel like a resident immersed in 400 years of history. Moreover, seasonal activities connected with local tourist facilities are plentiful. These include chestnut picking to experience the rich food culture, sake brewery tours with tastings of freshly brewed sake, Tamba pottery workshops, or countryside cycling adventures. The Hotel's concierge staff will gladly suggest diverse ways for you to enjoy your stay.
